Atacameño Communities Maintain Protest Camps in the Atacama Salt Flat and Raise Awareness about out the Environmental Impacts of Lithium Mining

A few days ago the Plurinational Andean Salt Flat Observatory (OPSAL) visited the camp that the Socaire community continues to maintain in the Atacama Salt Flat in opposition to the Memorandum of Understanding between CODELCO and SQM. The area is located on the outskirts of the SQM facilities, near the community. We spoke with some community members about their opinion regarding this pre-agreement, the visible damage that mining has caused in their territory, and the vision they have about the energy transition and electromobility.

Forum in Montreal:  OPSAL co-coordinator reports on the interests and conflicts tied to Canadian lithium investments in Chile

The co-coordinator of the Plurinational Observatory of Andean Salt Flats (OPSAL) in Chile, Ramón Balcázar, presented the report «Canadian lithium investments in Chile: extractivism and conflict» at a forum held at the Université du Québec in Montreal, Canada.

OPSAL’s documentary «Water is worth more than lithium» to be shown at international festival

The third version of the Global Extraction Film Festival (GEFF), a film festival that aims to show the destructive impacts of extractive industries worldwide, will be held between 26-30 october. This year’s program includes more than 250 documentaries and short films from 50 countries. Among them, «Andean Salt flats: Water is worth more than lithium», a documentary by the Plurinational Observatory of Andean Salt Flats (OPSAL in Spanish) that shows the impacts of non-metallic mining in the salt flats of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia.
